TREATMENT OPTIONS
How Does TMS Therapy Work?
Through a treatment coil, the NeuroStar TMS Therapy System generates highly concentrated, magnetic fields which turn on and off very rapidly. These magnetic fields are the same type and strength as those produced by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The treatment coil is applied to the head above the left prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is involved with mood regulation, and therefore is the location where the magnetic fields are focused.
NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a 40-minute outpatient procedure that is performed under the supervision of a psychiatrist. It does not require anesthesia or sedation, and patients remain awake and alert during the procedure. Treatment is administered daily for four to six weeks (20-30 treatments).
NeuroStar TMS Therapy® is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from one prior antidepressant medication at or above the minimal effective dose and duration in the current episode.
Short Sessions, Effective for a Wide Range of Depression Cases
Brainsway's Deep TMS therapy has been proven to be an effective depression treatment for a wide range of patients cases, from mild to persistent drug-resistant depression*. It has been proven to be helpful for patients who tried 1-4 types of antidepressants but did not improve. Brainsway Deep TMS sessions provide effective results in nearly half the time of other treatments (just 20 minutes compared to 37 with traditional TMS). Moreover, Brainsway Deep TMS does not require anesthesia, and entails no memory loss and no systemic side effects*.
TMS Therapy for Depression
TMS Therapy is a treatment for those who suffer from depression and have not received full relief from medications. It uses highly
focused pulsed magnetic waves to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain which is thought to control mood. TMS Therapy is a treatment that is performed in our office and under the supervision of our physicians and coordinators.
It is a non-invasive, meaning that it does not involve surgery or a procedure. It does not require any anesthesia or sedation, and you remain awake and alert during the treatment. TMS Therapy for Depression is non-Systemic, meaning that it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the blood stream throughout the body.
For example, antidepressant medications often cause side effects due to it entering the blood stream and affecting other bodily systems. This is why patient using antidepressants may suffer from constipation, dry mouth, loss of libido and other activity limiting side effects.
TMS Therapy for Depression does not have these side effects. The most common side effects reported during clinical trials were headache and scalp pain or discomfort. If they occur they are generally mild to moderate and occur less frequently after the first week of treatment.
Brainsway – A New Era in Depression Treatment
Brainsway™ has launched a new era, with a safe, effective* drug-free solution which can restore wellbeing for depression patients. Brainsway's Deep TMS treatment (Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-invasive treatment which can stimulate the brain region responsible for depression and bring significant improvement to patients. A generally well-tolerated outpatient depression treatment, Brainsway Deep TMS treatment does not require hospitalization or anesthesia, and entails no memory loss, no systemic side effects* and no indefinite drug regime.
Brief TMS Treatment
Brainsway's Deep TMS treatment requires only brief daily sessions of 20 minutes over 4-6 weeks. In each session, the patient is comfortably seated in a chair, and a cushioned helmet is gently placed over the head. The helmet generates brief magnetic fields, at an amplitude similar to that used in MRI systems. Throughout the session, patients remain alert and awake, and immediately afterwards, patients can return home independently to resume their daily routine.
